I Love handmade woolen socks

October 2, 2018 by admin 1 Comment

Fall is here and I’m wearing woolen sweaters and woolen socks to keep warm.

To be honest I looooove hand knit woolen socks. Nothing works better to keep the feet warm.

The last week I’ve been knitting some woolen socks.

First a couple of pairs for my guy and me to bring to the vintage camping this weekend – and then while we were there I started to make another pair for a friend. She told me her grandma used to knit socks for her, but now her grandma is too old to knit. So I decided to make her a pair.

Making hand knit woolen socks is pretty simple and fast … of course you can make really fancy, beautiful socks too but these everyday socks are so useful.

Many people hesitate to knit socks because they worry about how to make the heels.

I make the socks, and heels a couple of different ways …

this time I’ll share a pattern with heel flap and short rows.

Sounds difficult? It’s not!!

Woolen socks for women and men.

Size 35-37 (38-40) 41-44

Use sock yarn suitable for 3,5 mm needle

You’ll need 100 (150) 150 grams of yarn.

For these socks I’ve used two colors.

One multicolour and one black or white (solid color). Same amount of each or 100 grams multicolour and 50 grams solid color.

On needles 3,5 mm cast on 44 (48) 52 stitches.

Knit in the round *knit 2, purl 2* for 14 cm

alternate the two colors: Either two rows multicolour, one row solid color, or one row multicolour and one row solid color.

When cuff measures 14 cm start knitting heel flap.

Heel flap is knitted back and forth on 22 (24) 26 of the stitches. Continue until heel flap measures 4,5 (4,5) 5 cm.

start short rows:

From right side of heel flap knit until 8 st remaining left needle, turn. Purl until 8 st remains on other side of heel flap. Turn.

Knit until 7 st remains, turn. Purl until 7 st remains. Turn. Continue like this knitting one more stitch on each side every row until all stitches on heel flap are knitted.

Pick up 9 (9) 11 stitches on each side of heel flap and continue knitting in the round.

I usually continue rib knit on top of foot and stockinette stitch on the rest.

Make decreases every round, knit two together on each side of heel until you have 40 (44) 48 stitches in the round.

Knit until foot measures 1 cm less than desirable length.

Decrease for toes:

On each side of foot place a marker.

Knit two together on each side of the two markers (4 st decreased) every round until 8 stitches remains.

Cut yarn and using a needle thread the tail of the yarn trough all the remaining stitches. pull together. Fasten loose ends.

Make two similar socks.
