How to make homemade, super tasty, vegan sesame-cashew milk

For some reason I’ve always been a true fan of plant based “milk”. Even as a kid when “every kid in the country” had to drink milk, (they even served milk at school to make sure everyone got the calcium they needed to grow and stay healthy) I somehow managed to slip away from the milk-sessions at lunch. When I was at home my mother made me homemade alternatives for milk – like homemade sesame, almond or oat milk – and I LOOOOVED it!

 

I especially loved the sesame milk with it’s fresh, nut-like taste.

 

At that time I never heard about any store bought alternatives to cow-milk, and I guess my friends thought I was a bit nuts to drink those homemade, strange “milky” stuff.

 

Times have changed, and these days it’s common thing to choose vegan, be allergic to milk, or just like plant based better.

 

The store bought alternatives are good and tasty and works well. But at least here in my corner of the world they are overly pricey. So why not make homemade plant based milk ? It’s super simple and tastes great. You can even mix and match and blend in the ingredients you prefer. AND it’s much more affordable than the store bought ones. besides – you’ll get the joy of make something. 🙂

 

 

Today I’m sharing my recipe on sesame-cashew milk. This is absolutely one of my favorites along with oat milk. I like the taste and the slightly “creamy” feel of this milk.

 

Sesame seeds are high in calcium which is good. They are also high in healthy fat. This milk is free of sweetener or sugar of any sort – i like it the best “all natural”. 🙂

 

 

Now, on to the fun part:

 

HOW TO MAKE SESAME-CASHEW MILK :

 

makes aprx. 1 litre plant based milk

 

120 ml sesame seeds

150 ml cashew nuts (unsalted)

800 ml water

 

  • Add all the ingredients to a bowl or large jar with a lid.
  • let the seeds and nuts soak overnight (or at least 8 hours)
  • Add all the ingredients to a blender. Blend on high speed for a couple of minutes.
  • Pour the blended milk trough a cloth or a drainer
  • store the finished sesame-cashew milk in a glass bottle. Shake before use.
  • The milk can be stored for a couple of days in the fridge.
  • (as for the remaining “waste” of seds and nuts I use this when i bake my momebaked bread. It’s still full of great nutritients, great flavour and lots of fibre. No reason to throw it away)

 

This milk is perfect to drink, but also to make for example golden turmeric milk, matcha latte or what ever you prefer.

I dag har jeg lyst til å dele oppskrift på min hjemmelagde sesam-cashew-melk.

 

Helt siden jeg var barn har jeg vært stor fan av plantebasert melk. På den tiden var dette svært uvanlig, og det var nok en almen oppfatnig at alle barn måtte drikke melk for å kolde seg sunne og friske. Det ble servert melk på skole og barnehage for at alle skulle få nok kalsium – men av en eller annen grunn greide jeg ofte å snike meg unna melkeserveringen… Når jeg kom hjem lagde min fantastiske, alternativ-tenkende mamma plantebasert melk av sesamfrø, mandler eller havre. Jeg husker fortsatt at jeg elsket sesam-melken. Den har en frisk, nøtteaktig smak.

 

Tidene har forandret seg og i dag er det vanlig at mange velger alternativt, vegansk, har intoleranser eller rett og slett bare liker plantebasert best. Det er uproblematisk å skaffe gode, plantebaserte alternativer til melk i så og si alle butikker. Men, mange av disse produktene er forholdsvis kostbare. Så hvorfor ikke prøve å lage hjemmelagd melk av nøtter og frø? Det er både enkelt, morsomt og litt rimligere enn å kjøpe ferdig. Man kan selv blande og bruke de ingrediensene man liker best – og best av alt: gleden av å lage noe helt fra bunnen. 🙂

 

Så, her er oppskrift på en av mine favoritter, sammen med havre melk, hjemmelagd sesam-og-cashew-melk.

 

Sesamfrø er rike på kalsium og sunt fett. I tillegg er melken fri for søtning og sukker. Jeg liker den best med den helt naturlige, fyldige smaken og lett “kremete” konsistensen

 

 

Hjemmelagd Sesam-Cashew-melk

 

blir ca 1 liter

 

1,2 dl sesamfrø (uten skall)

1,5 dl cashew nøtter (usaltet!!)

8 dl vann

 

  • Ha alle ingrediensene i en bolle eller stort glass med lokk og la nøttene og frøene ligge i vannet over natta eller i minst 8 timer.
  • ha alle ingrediensene i en blender og blend alt på høy hastighet i et par minutter.
  • Hell den blendede melken gjennom en sil eller et klede.
  • Oppbevar sesam-cashew melken i en glassflaske i kjøleskapet. Ristes litt før bruk.
  • Melken holder seg et par dager i kjøleskapet.
  • “avfallet” av nøtter og frø som blir igjen i silen bruker jeg til brødbaking. Det er fortsatt både sundt og godt og inneholder mange fine næringsstoffer og fiber. Ingen grunn til å kaste det i søpla.

 

Denne melken er fin å drikke, bruke til matlaging og til for eksempel matcha latte, golden milk i kaffe, te eller liknende.
